North Hudson District Past State Vice President George Carroll descibes how he approached getting a grant from New York State for his Lodge. His experience may serve as an example for your Lodge to fund a significant improvement. George has indicated that he is willing to answer any questions you might have about his experience.
The grant process (as experienced by me) is very simple and I would like to share it with the other Lodges in the District.
I went to the local office of our Representatives (In my case-Senator James L. Seward and Assemblyman Daniel Hooker). There I was given a one page form to request a New York State Grant. The form asks for information on who we are, what we do and what we want the grant for. Simple enough?We are the Elks Lodge located in your Senate or Assembly District; We are a charitable organization donating to various charities in the community and among the recipients of our charities are?Veterans, Scouts, Seniors etc.;
We need the grant ie. ?To pave our parking lot because it was washed away during recent heavy rains? (Note: The grant can be for any purpose such as upgrading air conditioning, flooring, windows etc.)
Note: You will have to insert the amount of money you are requesting and the Clerk can tell you the ballpark figure of what is available.
I submitted 2 requests-one to the State Senator and one to the Assemblyman.
After the forms were submitted, it took approx 3 weeks before I was notified by mail that the request was approved. A contract between the State of NY and the Lodge is then mailed to you. It is approx 10 pages and it asks again what work is to be performed etc. In my case, the paving was to be performed by a contractor so 90% of the question were n/a and I had only to fill in the portion regarding contractors.
I sent the contract back to the State and in a short period of time the check was in the mail.
Note: The timing of a grant has to do with the State?s Budget process. The Clerk in the office can tell you when grant money is available.
